At first glance, a tilt & turn window doesn’t look all that unusual. Then you turn the handle.
In one position, the top of the window tilts inward, leaving a small opening for fresh air. Turn the handle again and the entire sash swings inward like a door.
It’s a simple idea, but once you’ve used one, you start to understand why this European-style window has become increasingly popular in Canadian homes.
The tilt position is particularly useful when you want some fresh air without opening the entire window. Think cool air coming into the bedroom overnight, a little ventilation while you’re cooking, or one of those spring days in Ottawa when it’s finally warm enough to crack a window again.

Neither window wins every room.
If you don't want a sash opening into the room, a casement may make more sense. Above a kitchen counter, for example, keeping the opening toward the exterior can be particularly convenient.
