A side entrance has to handle a lot: frequent use, changing weather, security and whatever your family manages to drag through it on a daily basis. Choosing the right replacement starts with how the entrance is actually used, then works outward from there — size, construction, glass, insulation and finishing details.

Start With How You Actually Use the Entrance

Not every side door has the same job. Yours might connect the driveway to the kitchen, open into a mudroom, provide access beside the garage or serve as a separate entrance to the basement.

A properly fitted replacement should also close and latch confidently. You shouldn't have to pull the handle toward you, lean into the door and perform a small ritual every time you want the deadbolt to line up.

Side entrances can be particularly exposed. Some face an open driveway or narrow walkway where there isn't much shelter from the wind, and January has a pretty effective way of finding every little gap around an old door.
