Window installers in the Ottawa market typically charge about $150 to $500 in labour per standard window. Large windows, bays, bows, second-storey work and full-frame installation cost more. Labour usually makes up 20% to 35% of the total installed price, and most window companies build it into one price per window.

These are 2026 market estimates for the Ottawa area. Actual charges depend on the home and the installer.

How installers price their work

Contractors use one of three methods:

  • Per window. A flat labour rate for each opening, adjusted for size and type.

  • Per square foot. The window's area sets the labour, so a big window costs more to install than a small one.

  • Installed price. Product and labour combined into a single price per window. This is the most common approach for replacement window companies, and the easiest for homeowners to compare.

What changes the labour cost?

Installation type

Full-frame installation removes the old window down to the studs. It takes longer and costs about 20% more overall than a retrofit, which reuses the existing frame.

Window size and weight

Large units and triple pane glass are heavy. They need more people and sometimes lifting equipment.

Access

Second and third storey windows, windows over a roof or deck and tight side yards add time.

The wall around the window

Brick, stone and stucco take more care than vinyl siding. Older homes often need extra work to square the opening.

Finishing

Interior trim, exterior aluminum capping and drywall touch-ups are sometimes quoted separately.

Travel

Jobs well outside the city can carry a travel charge.

What a proper window installation includes

When you compare labour prices, compare the work behind them. A complete installation covers:

  1. Protecting floors and furniture

  2. Removing the old window and, for full-frame, the old frame

  3. Inspecting the rough opening for rot and water damage

  4. Setting the new window level, plumb and square

  5. Insulating the gap with low-expansion foam

  6. Flashing and sealing against water

  7. Installing interior trim

  8. Capping and caulking the exterior

  9. Removing and disposing of the old windows

  10. Cleaning up

A low labour quote often drops steps 3, 6, 7 or 8. Those are the steps that keep water out of your walls.

Hidden labour charges to ask about

  • Rot or framing repairs, billed by the hour

  • Disposal fees per window

  • Trim and capping as add-ons

  • Extra for second-storey windows

  • A minimum charge on small jobs

At Northline Windows, installation is included in every quote and we supply our own interior trim. If we find rotted or damaged studs on site, we replace them at no extra charge.

Can I buy windows myself and hire an installer?

You can, and some contractors offer labour-only installation. Keep two things in mind. You carry the risk if the windows are measured wrong. And if a problem appears later, the manufacturer and the installer can each point to the other. Buying the window and the installation from one company avoids that.
