For an ordinary window replacement in a home used only for personal purposes, you should not assume the bill is deductible from your income. Rental-property expenses and specific renovation credits follow different rules.
The practical first step is to identify what kind of help you are asking about: an income-tax deduction, a tax credit or an energy rebate. Those terms are not interchangeable. This overview was checked on October 15, 2026; confirm the rules for the tax year of your expense before making a claim.
What is the difference between a deduction, a credit and a rebate?
A deduction reduces income used in calculating tax. A tax credit affects the tax calculation under the rules of that credit. A rebate program has its own application and payment process.
An eligible energy-efficiency rebate does not, by itself, establish that the same purchase is an income-tax deduction. Keep the rebate approval and your tax assessment separate.
Save on Energy’s Home Renovation Savings information is a starting point for Ontario energy rebates. It is not a CRA ruling on your renovation invoice.
What if the windows are in a rental property?
CRA allows reasonable expenses incurred to earn rental income, but distinguishes current expenses from capital expenses. Its rental-expense guidance explains that framework.
A current expense and a capital improvement are not claimed in the same way. CRA’s current-or-capital guidance considers factors such as lasting benefit and whether work restores a property or improves it beyond its original condition.
Do not classify a window project solely from the words “repair” or “replacement” on the invoice. Give your accountant the scope of work, the condition before the work and the products installed. Ask whether the cost is a current expense or a capital amount and how any assistance affects the treatment.
What if you rent out only part of the home?
The personal and rental portions need to be considered separately. CRA’s rental-income definitions distinguish deductible expenses from personal expenses.
Keep a record of which openings were replaced and which areas they serve. Ask your accountant how the expense should be allocated rather than assuming that having a tenant makes every window deductible.
Business use of a home can raise different questions. Explain the actual use of the property before relying on advice intended for a fully rented building.
Can an accessibility tax credit apply?
The Home Accessibility Tax Credit addresses qualifying renovations for eligible individuals and dwellings. Its purpose includes improving accessibility or reducing a qualifying individual’s risk of harm.
That does not make ordinary energy-efficiency replacement automatically eligible. If the window work forms part of a specific accessibility renovation, explain that purpose to a tax professional and confirm the applicable tax-year requirements before relying on a credit.
The CRA page reviewed for this article describes the 2025 tax year. Do not carry its amounts or rules about combining credits into a 2026 claim without checking the current guidance. This article does not assume that two credits can be claimed for the same expense.
What paperwork should you keep?
Retain the written agreement, detailed invoices, proof of payment, installation dates and product information. For a rental or accessibility project, keep the documents explaining the property use or reason for the work as well.
Before budgeting for tax savings, ask your tax professional which provision applies and how it affects your particular claim. A contractor can describe the window project but cannot establish your personal tax entitlement.
If you are still comparing the renovation itself, request a Northline estimate. Keep that project price separate from any tax benefit until you have confirmed the treatment.
